Rocanville Town council has decided to postpone the completion date of the indoor pool renovation project until December 31, 2024. This was agreed at the meeting held on December 6th.
Yahoo News reported that a request for proposal (RFP), for the pool project, is open until January 5, 2024 on SaskTenders. This allows interested parties to submit bids on the demolition of the existing facility and construction of a new one.
Pool & Spa Marketing Report explained that the project faced many challenges, primarily in terms of cost. Despite receiving a grant of almost $1,27 million from the Investing In Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), however, the lowest bid was $3.645 millions. This is well over the estimated cost of $2.34million. A second tender held in April ended with a single $4.939-million bid, which put the project on hold.
Penticton Herald reports that if the pool is not substantially completed by December 31, 2024 the town may lose the ICIP funds. The Rocanville pool refurbishment committee proposed at a public forum held in August that the town take on the role as general contractor and separate sections of the project be put out to tender. The downside of this proposal would be an extension to the project timeline.
According to Hamilton Spectator , despite the challenges, background work, such as site meetings with contractors, has already begun. Prices have increased and there are supply chain problems due to the COVID-19 epidemic. The winter tendering process is intended to bring in competitive bids while staying within budget. Ron Reed, the mayor, expressed his optimism for the success of the project in the same report. However, he acknowledged that there were uncertainties. The deadline of January 5, for proposals, is important. It’s hoped that the project will continue with favourable pricing and secure funding.
