A North Carolina legislator has urged changes to the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors to better protect consumers from unreliable contractors. This initiative comes amid investigations conducted by WBTV in North Carolina into the practices of a local pool contract.
Laura Budd is the Democratic Party Representative who, according to WBTV has called for changes. She wants more regulations on contractors. Budd has been a North Carolina contractor watcher for many years. She is particularly interested in contractors who take on projects but do not deliver. As stated in the NCLBGC report, she believes that while it aims to tackle these issues, the NCLBGC is currently under-resourced, and lacks enforcement authority.
WBTV‘s investigation into a local contractor heightened Budd’s concerns. According to reports, the owner of the firm left unfinished numerous pool projects that cost homeowners a lot of money.
According to the WBTV, other suggestions from the legislator include adding more rigorous background checks to the renewal process of contractor licenses and encouraging the NCLBGC take proactive measures to stop fraudulent practices. Budd stresses the importance of enhanced transparency and accountability in order to protect consumers.
WBTV reports that the board, in response to this situation, has mandated background checks for all new contractors as part of the licensing process. Budd, however, advocates that background checks be made mandatory for all contractors and not just the newcomers. She claims that regular background checks will increase the detection of any suspicious conduct.
Budd advises that, in addition to the legislative changes, homeowners who are undertaking construction projects should verify the license status of contractors and obtain multiple estimates. They may also want to hire an architect or general contractor with experience to supervise their project.
