Just because the days are shorter and more relaxed, homeowners don’t have to give up on the luxury of living. They want to have fun in their backyard all year long with friends and family. To learn more about what homeowners want today, we reached out to up-and-coming custom pool designer Ryan Young in Las Vegas, NV. In a traditional market known for freeform lagoon-style pools, Young says today’s homeowners in Vegas are looking for something else. He says that a lot of homeowners have turned to contemporary designs for their homes.
With freeform pools becoming more popular, there’s been some backlash with recent pool trends. Notably, they don’t suit the needs of many homeowners and are seen as too risky for children.
“We’re shifting away from those traditional kidney bean-shaped pools with rock grotto waterfalls that have been more predominant in this area. Those are just done over and over again,” said Young, who loves working with clients willing to push the envelope.
It has been gratifying to see that there are customers with a real hunger for new and innovative design. Consequently, our work is evolving. “You’ve seen it a lot with the industry nowadays. Social media has made things much faster, moving quickly.”
Moreover, he suggested that professionals stay up-to-date with trends by checking out content on places like Instagram and Pinterest. My experience as a freelance graphic designer has shown me that constantly thinking about the next big thing and what might be coming in the future is essential. This way, we can avoid becoming stuck in an uninteresting and repetitive design pattern – we’ll always have something new!
Infinity pools with weir walls are difficult to find in Las Vegas. The city’s flat topography means that architects and builders must be creative to include complicated features in their designs.
Modern amenities like perimeter overflow and raised infinity edges provide a sleek, poolside experience. These kinds of high-end design features are 180° away from what you might expect when you think of a pool. But it doesn’t stop at design. “It’s been a learning curve to be able to push new things. Over the past few years, we still have clients that say ‘we love that but not for this market’ or ‘that’s beautiful but may not be suitable for Las Vegas.
More and more people in Vegas are interested in modern designs for their pools and gardens, so the market isn’t far behind. Companies there have adopted that trend, which is starting to spread to homes here as well.
Young understands that “introducing something new to this market can be a double-edged sword,” Said Young. With the appearance of Farmhouse, Ranch, Tudor, and Craftsman architecture designs in his work, he is a must-hire builder. Finding modern design trends that suit different types of homes and backyards can be a challenge, especially when you want elements that don’t necessarily go with your outdoor space.
“We sometimes find that people have planned every detail, but then they keep changing the design as we move on. Once all of their design changes are made, the method can turn out quite different from the original concept and most often not for the better, said Young. We once had a customer tell us how their materials selections during the pool construction phase led to many unexpected and unnecessary change orders. This resulted in an apparent subpar design that left customers dissatisfied at the end of all of this.
It is something Young has learned to avoid. Setting up predetermined menu choices reduces the number of options clients have to choose from. Too many design choices will;l make it difficult for clients to make a confident decision and choose things they don’t fully understand.
I think it is a question of finding the appropriate balance. Still, Young has become very good at designing backyards incorporating modern and contemporary elements while still fitting in the Las Vegas tradition.
Young’s relentless dedication to maintaining the highest standards has enabled him to collaborate with Tom Hegan and many other elite-tier figures. This is helping him to continually build backyards that are both top-notch and stand out from the crowd.
“I’ve learned a lot from working with Joepaulo on this project. Of course, he’s had much more experience than me, but it still feels like I’m learning when we discuss how to solve problems.” Says Young, “It’s been an exciting process – to have this opportunity come our way!”
Although he envisions more collaborations in the future, Ryan Young is still making a name for himself in the pool construction market. He’s focused on cutting-edge materials, and large custom builds, making him stand out from the crowd.
Stepping outside his comfort zone and taking on more custom work is also helping distinguish him in the eyes of his peers in the industry, who would perhaps not know him as well if he stuck to their company’s style. On a recent project that caught our eye, he brought in artist Charles Ray to design and install a tile interior finish. This work shows impressive progress as one of Young’s new projects has already been nominated for the prestigious Blind Art Design Contest in Wisconsin.
