As New Brunswick prepares to co-host the 2029 Canada Summer Games, the province’s only Olympic-sized pool, the Canada Games Aquatic Centre, is about to receive a major construction-driven facelift.

According to a report by the Telegraph Journal, the renovation represents one of the largest public aquatic infrastructure investments in Atlantic Canada in decades.

Originally built for the 1985 Games, the $25-million renovation project aims to extend the life and functionality of the 40-year-old facility. The overhaul will include structural and cosmetic upgrades designed to meet national competition standards while modernizing the pool experience for everyday users.

Key construction elements include:

  • Addition of two warm-up lanes adjacent to the 50-m (164-ft) competition pool
  • Extensive locker room and washroom renovations
  • Expansion and reconfiguration of spectator seating areas
  • New accessibility features throughout the building
  • Esthetic enhancements to improve the overall user experience

In preparation for the Games, 2025 will be spent on engineering assessments and construction bid preparation. Once the design and tendering phases are complete, the large-scale renovation effort will break ground, with completion expected well ahead of the Games.
