Insta VS Reality: Pool-Seeking Tourists Get In on the Action

One traveler found out the hard truth about Bali’s diverse parts when she displayed the stunning panorama from her hostel.

Luna De Fauw (a Dutch tourist) shared a TikTok video that she shot from her Canggu hotel balcony in Bali in December.

The video began with a view of the beautiful pool within the hotel grounds. She then moved to a muddy field and unfinished houses in background.

Travel bloggers record their Insta VS Reality pool Experience

Captioned as “Bali Insta Vs Real Life”, Ms. De Fauw’s video displayed the bright blue poolside calm with lined-up deck lounges and manicured lawns.

The camera panted next to a muddy expanse of grassy patches and abandoned buildings. There was also a large construction site further away.

Reactions to Social Media

Social media users reacted to Ms. De Fauw’s post about Bali, calling it “overrated” but others defended the well-known tourist spot.

Many have criticised Ms. De Fauw’s efforts to save money while on Bali vacation. They urged her to “pay more” for a more luxurious experience.

Others found humor in the situation by commenting on the muddy grassy area near the hostel.

One of the jokers said, “We love the alternative beaches.”

This footage is similar to the one posted by TikTokers at the popular holiday destination. It shows beautiful villas located next to swampy areas.

Victoria Goulbourne, a British tourist, revealed the truth on the video-sharing app TikTok.

The video was overlayed with the words “Insta VS Reality”. It panned from her villa’s deck and palm trees to the dirty swamp and creek in the backyard. This video perfectly demonstrates the differences between reality and expectation.

Insta Vs Reality & Travel Culture

The “Insta vs Reality travel culture is a distinction between the highly edited and idealized versions of travel experiences that go viral on social media and the less glamorous or negative aspects of the same experiences. This phenomenon is illustrated by tourists posting videos of beautiful pools that only show a construction zone or unlandscaped environment.

Tourists are creating a false impression of their trip by focusing on the most desirable or beautiful aspects, such a pool or scenic surroundings. They also downplay or hide the more unpleasant parts of their trip, such as unlandscaped areas or construction zones. This can lead to disappointment and frustration for viewers when they reach the destination they have imagined.

This behavior contributes to the increasing trend of fake or “staged” travel content on social networks, which can be misleading for consumers. This is why it’s so important for travelers to remember this and strive to present authentic and honest content about their travel experiences, instead of presenting polished and idealized versions.
