No matter if he is designing in a contemporary or traditional style, Dan Gordon, a landscape architect who has won numerous awards, lets the lay of the land guide him.
Gordon, whose studio is located in Wellesley (Massachusetts), says, “In each of our projects, we aim to create an environment which’s humanistic.” We design gardens that feel inviting and welcoming. They blend into the landscape yet have defined spaces that give them a sense of home.
His philosophy is illustrated by two properties – Pond’s Edge Estate, Boston’s Chestnut Hill region, and Cliff Ridge Estate (Wellesley).
Gordon created a pair of oval terraces connecting the pool to the larger landscape at Pond’s Edge by using the slope at the back of the 1911 craftsman-style home in a park-like setting.
The terraces are made from bluestone in blues and tans. They also have rust. The dining area is located on the top terrace, which is softened with a holly hedge border. The lower one houses a rectangular pool with bluestone coping. A perennial border seamlessly transitions into the rest of the yard, including the pond named after it.
Cliff’s Edge is a 2.5-acre estate that Gordon designed. It features a Tudor-style red brick house and a modern backyard. Gordon also created a landscape that blends the indoors with the outdoors. The glass walls give the home the appearance of a greenhouse.
The bluestone terrace, similar to Pond’s Edge, has straight lines and steps that lead to the rectangular infinity-edge swimming pool. It is also characterized by a black-granite weir and a black-onyx finish.
Gordon describes it as “almost like a reflection pool.” “Our use of traditional materials, textures, and colors blend the contemporary renovations to the house with the landscape that resides comfortably in a traditional context.”
Gordon notes that each project is a collaboration with his office as well as nature, the builder, and the client. He says, “It’s all a team effort.”
