The city of Kelowna will request approval of an allocation of $600,000.00 for the replacement boiler system of the Parkinson Recreation Centre in Kelowna.
In a report from KelownaNow earlier this week, the city announced its decision to close the pool of the 51-year old recreation centre for a period up to early January 2024 in order to replace boilers that are unsafe to operate.
In the report, it is stated that the funds for the replacement boiler system and pool equipment will come from the building repair reserve fund of the city. PRC staff pointed out that the need for boiler replacement was identified in a spring condition assessment. The city also supervises the maintenance of building air circulation and pool dehumidification equipment, while planning for any necessary repairs or replacements.
A report from Castanet states that “demolition is scheduled to start on October 23. It will take 8 to 12 weeks for the project to be completed.” The building will remain operational despite the lack of heat during construction.
