14-Year-Old Killed After Wall Collapse at Air Force Base Pool Club

A devastating incident occurred on Monday afternoon, July 22, 2024, at Robins Air Force Base, resulting in the tragic death of a 14-year-old boy and injuring three other minors. The collapse of a concrete wall inside the men’s locker room at the Heritage Pool has left the community in mourning and raised serious concerns about safety.

Pool Club Incident

Houston County Coroner James Williams reported that the collapse happened around 3 p.m. The incident caused significant injuries to four minors, one of whom was treated on scene, while the other three were rushed to local hospitals. Tragically, the 14-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries at Houston Healthcare in Warner Robins.

In an official statement, a spokesperson for Robins Air Force Base confirmed the details, emphasizing the commitment of the base to support the affected families. “We can confirm that an incident occurred at the Heritage Club Pool men’s locker room on the afternoon of Monday, July 22, 2024. Four minors were injured in the incident. One was treated on scene and three were transported to local hospitals, where one later died. We remain committed to supporting these families as we navigate through this difficult time for Team Robins.”

Investigation and Response

The Heritage Pool has been closed until further notice as investigations are underway. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations at Robins Air Force Base is leading the investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. An autopsy has been scheduled at the GBI Crime Lab in Macon as part of the death investigation.

Colonel Deedrick Reese, Installation and 78th Air Base Wing commander, expressed profound sorrow and gratitude in a statement: “Our hearts are broken for these individuals and their families. We remain committed to supporting our Airmen and their loved ones as we navigate this difficult time for Team Robins. We want to thank the first responders – including lifeguards, installation, and community personnel – who responded to this tragic incident with compassion and professionalism.”

Eyewitness Accounts and Personal Impact

The incident has deeply affected the local community, particularly those directly involved. Melissa Noles, a grandmother of two boys injured in the collapse, shared her harrowing experience. Her grandson and step-grandson suffered non-life-threatening injuries, with one sustaining broken ribs and a collapsed lung. Noles recounted that her grandson had noticed cracks and chipped mortar around the base of the wall prior to the collapse, a detail that may prove crucial in the investigation.

“I did ask my grandson if he noticed anything unusual about the wall, and he did say that he noticed some of the mortar had cracked and chipped around the bottom of the wall,” Noles said. Despite their physical injuries, the emotional toll has been significant, as the boys were heartbroken to learn that their friend did not survive. “We are very saddened by the loss of the other young man and we are keeping his family in our prayers,” Noles added.

Community Support and Reactions

The tragedy has prompted a wave of support from the base and the broader community. Chaplain services have been made available for the affected families and those who were present at the scene. This support is vital as they navigate the emotional aftermath of such a traumatic event.

The base has assured the community that they are taking all necessary measures to support those affected and to understand the factors that led to this tragic accident. “Our hearts are broken for these individuals and their families,” said Col. Reese. “We remain committed to supporting our Airmen and their loved ones as we navigate this difficult time for Team Robins.”
