According to a city council report, Dawson City in Yukon faces a budget deficit of $38million for the construction of its new recreation centre.
According to a report from the Hamilton Spectator the Yukon government has committed $65 millions through the Investing In Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). Richard Mostyn clarified that the $65 million is for a facility which includes an ice rink and a curling-rink as well as a concession stand, not the larger design shown in the report.
The report also states that the proposed facility will include various amenities, such as a curling rink and skating rink. It will also have a gymnasium, a fitness center, etc. It has been discussed to repair the existing Art and Margaret Fry Rec Centre built in 2000. However, structural damage and increasing maintenance costs are a challenge.
In the report, Paul Robitaille, city parks and recreation manager of the city, also mentions the insecurity about salvaging the existing Art and Margaret Fry Recreation Centre and the rising costs for construction across Canada. Mostyn stressed the importance of cost-effectiveness and operational sustainability. In a subsequent meeting, the city council discussed possible sources of additional funding in order to cover this shortfall. Mostyn hopes to put the project out to tender by 2024, with construction set for 2025.
