Vandals broke into Fernie’s aquatic centre window last weekend, leading to a shutdown of the centre and forcing 400 participants to change to Cranbrook city.
Break-in caused pieces of broken glass to fall onto the pool deck and into main pool. This rendered it inaccessible, and made it impossible for anyone to use the pool. Other damages were also done to the centre. According to a press release from the Elk Valley Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the repairs were estimated to cost $30,000 and the city had to close down the centre for five to seven consecutive days.
“It was a real punch in the gut. My eyes were full of tears. My eyes were so full of tears that I couldn’t look at the children.
According to the city, this is not the first vandalism committed against the aquatic centre. In 2019, there were two instances where vandals damaged the windows with rocks and earlier in the year there was an arson case near the lobby doors. According to the city’s director for parks, facilities and recreation, the city will look into installing security cameras outside of the centre in an effort to reduce vandalism.
