Building Pools is a Growing Trend
By Matthew Sands
Pool builders are integrating ICF (insulated concrete forms) into the construction of pools, incorporating specifically polyvinylchloride (PVC), membrane interiors.
The industry explores new options for pool construction to meet market demands. Suppliers often introduce new products that improve pool aesthetics or technologies that come from parallel industries and are incorporated into the pool construction process to overcome market obstacles or satisfy consumer demands.
No wonder that pool builders are increasingly turning to insulated cement forms (ICFs), which have a PVC membrane inside, to create solid concrete walls with an attractive and durable waterproofing solution. These ICFs can be welded on site. These materials (foam sheets and PVC membranes) are readily available and stocked, allowing builders to build pools of any size with resort-style features.
ICF is a relatively new system in the pool industry, but it has been widely used for home construction since many years. The availability of a new, durable, attractive and easily available PVC waterproofing system that has been used in Europe for many decades has helped to boost the success. Pool builders are now integrating ICF methods into pool construction and specifically PVC membrane interiors. This integration allows builders to create custom pools and simultaneously control their construction timelines.
Understanding ICFs
ICFs are hollow blocks made of expanded polystyrene and plastic webbing that connects the sides of the block. ICF systems are used in residential construction for a long time, especially in home foundations. This technique uses interlocking polystyrene foam blocks (EPS) to create a framework for reinforced cement walls. The ICFs are then stacked and reinforced with steel rebar. Concrete is then poured into the forms to create a durable and robust pool structure. After the concrete has cured, the forms are left in place, providing superior insulation for the pool.
