London, Ontario’s city council delayed its decision about the fate of Thames Park Pool. This popular gathering spot is a favorite spot in the Old South neighborhood because of its difficult location from an engineering standpoint.

A report by CBC News states that although staff recommended its closure, a unanimous motion was passed by the community. The protective services committee directed staff to investigate other options for aquatics amenities within the neighborhood and to hold more consultations.

Also, the motion calls for an investigation to determine if the pool, which was closed last summer after cracks were discovered, can be reopened for next year’s swimming seasons.

Coun. Skylar Franke admitted that the pool’s location was both the best and worst. It holds a special place in Old South but is also susceptible to flooding and frostheave. Mayor Josh Morgan considers the situation a “no win situation”. The motion will allow the community more time to weigh in before making a final decision.

Shawn Lewis, Deputy Mayor, referred to the information in the staff report, which indicated that the pool had been completely rebuilt in 1959, 1975 and 2010, and also extensive repairs in 1980s and 1990s. Lewis was open to the idea of the pool being kept open for a while longer. However, he suggested that the community might have to admit that a 50-m (164 ft) outdoor pool may not be possible.

Lewis feels the current location of the pool is unacceptable and that it would require regular infrastructure renewal if it was to be maintained. He advocated instead for the community to enjoy the pool year round for the next 50-years. Lewis also pointed out London’s recreation masterplan discouraged the building of more outdoor pools due to their shorter swimming season and other factors. The pool was closed by staff.

Rick King, a resident, expressed satisfaction at the decision of the committee to keep the future options open for the pool. He said thoughtful consideration was a step forward and that it was best to avoid making hasty decisions. Council will soon approve the motion.
