Lately, we’ve seen plenty of photos popping up on our social media feeds of pool companies showcasing their new Cybertrucks. These pool professionals are among the very first who’ve been patiently waiting in line to obtain this innovative new vehicle, with some having waited over five years for their reservation to be fulfilled.
One such early adopter is Sam Khacherian, owner of Speedy Sam’s Pool Service in Irvine, California. We had the opportunity to ask him about his experience with the Cybertruck and why he chose it for his business.
Q&A With Cybertruck Owner: Sam K.
Which model Cybertruck is in the photos? “The Dual Motor Foundation Series,” Sam replied. This model, known for its robust performance and efficiency, fits well with the demands of a busy pool service route.
Were you on a long waiting list to get yours? “Yes, I reserved an hour after the first announcement, I believe it was in 2019. I was waiting that long till I got my purchase order in December 2023 and picked it up in February,” he shared. The anticipation and long wait reflect the high demand and excitement surrounding Tesla’s groundbreaking vehicle.
Have you seen any other pool guys following suit and getting a Cybertruck for their route? “I saw one recently on Facebook but not in person. Many have approached me saying they are on the waiting list and asked if I recommend it,” Sam noted. His early adoption positions him as a trendsetter among his peers, many of whom are eager to see the Cybertruck’s performance in action.
Why did you choose the Cybertruck over a standard gasoline or diesel vehicle? “I chose Cybertruck over gas and diesel because, number one, I was tired of pumping fuel. On average, I spend $1200-1400 in fuel each month with my previous Tacoma. Doing the math with having solar on my house, which I plug in at home mostly, the truck is charged by morning, ready to go. The cost of the Cybertruck versus my Tacoma is only $200-300 more a month,” he explained. The economic and environmental benefits of switching to an electric vehicle were clear motivators for Sam.
Would you recommend it to other pool pros? “Absolutely. Not only are your gear and tools locked up and secured in the bed, so it’s not stolen, but the comfort of the air suspension, the drive-by-wire, and the power make you enjoy working in it. Not to mention the soon-to-come full self-drive, which will help with all the paperwork I can do in the car instead of waiting until I get home,” Sam enthusiastically recommended, suggesting that the practical features and futuristic capabilities of the Cybertruck are what drew him to the vehicle in the first place.
Yes, there are plenty of high end features to love about Tesla’s new vehicle. Enough to put it in direct competition with Ford’s flagship truck, the F-150, which has been the preferred vehicle of those in the pool service profession and America’s best-selling truck for almost 50 years. With that said, the Tesla Cybertruck’s price may still be out of reach for many pool service technicians. The 2024 model starting at $81,895 and going up to $101,985 depending on the trim and options. This makes the cost of ownership a significant investment. While the long-term savings on fuel and maintenance are appealing, the initial price tag could be quite a barrier for small business owners and independent contractors.
Comparing Apples to Apples
Although the Tesla Cybertruck starts at around $80k, its far from the most expensive truck on the market and is relatively more affordable than several high-end truck options currently available. For instance, the Ford Super Duty Limited starts at $97k, the Dodge Ram 1500 TRX begins at $96k, and the GMC Sierra HD Denali also starts at $96k . Despite its innovative features and electric powertrain, the Cybertruck provides a cost-effective alternative to these traditional, high-end trucks.
Tesla Cybertruck Specs

- Range (+Range Extender): 440+ miles
- Acceleration: 2.6 sec (0-60 mph)

Ultimately, for pool service pros considering an upgrade, the Tesla Cybertruck offers more than just eye-catching aesthetics. With its powerful performance, cost efficiency, and cutting-edge features, many in the industry believe it could be a strategic investment. However, its high price point and a recent recall affecting 12,000 units could make some pool technicians balk on pulling the trigger right away to own one.
