Sault Ste. Marie proposes a solution to the lifeguard shortage
The City of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. was previously confronted with cancelled swim classes due to a lifeguard shortage and has asked its councillors for a full-time role as an aquatic leader to rectify the situation.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. was previously confronted with cancelled swim classes due to a lifeguard shortage and has asked its councillors for a full-time role as an aquatic leader to rectify the situation.

Brent Lamming, city director of community services, said that the position would increase the certificate rates for instructors and lifeguards, which directly addresses the shortage. He made this statement in a report for Matthew Shoemaker, mayor, and ward councillors.

This position will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Implement the Ontario government and City of Sault Ste. Marie’s policies and rules, regulations, policies
  • Make sure you are aware of where and how protective equipment is used
  • Be able to deliver first aid services
  • Perform lifeguarding and instructor duties as required
  • As necessary, take water fitness classes
  • Help teachers and support daily operations
  • Assistance in staff education
  • Submit shift reports
  • Observe instructors and lifeguards during scheduled shifts. Notify the aquatic supervisor if there are any problems.
  • Time sheets must be filled in correctly, advanced courses taught, all paperwork presented accurately, on-deck organization maintained, and inventory maintained.

“This position will increase swimming lesson programming to pre-pandemic levels. This position will allow for more deck attendants to assist in the provision of swim lessons with aquatic supervision. Lamming says that the aquatic lead would be available to train more deck attendants on a regular basis while they work towards their certification.

The new position is temporary and full-time for one year, from Nov. 22, 2022 to Nov. 21, 20,23.

The council members will be asked to make the job permanent when they discuss the budget in February 2023.
