The immediate cause of a pool leak has been determined by an investigation into the premature closing of the Canada Games Pool in New Westminster, B.C. The city council was presented with a report that identified sediments settling beneath the pool as the cause of the leak.
According to the analysis that was presented to the City, “The CGP Tank Failure was Caused by Stress Differentials Resulting from Sediment Settlement Under the Pool.” After a thorough evaluation, the geotechnical engineers concluded that the foundational soils beneath the pool had settled.
According to the news report, originally the CGP project was to close and decommission in August 2023, as part of the TACC (t@m@sewtxw Aquatic Community Centre) that would be built adjacent to it. However, it unexpectedly closed in November 2021.
According to the news report, an analysis revealed that a number of factors could have been involved in this problem, but no single cause was identified. The factors were the age of the facility, vibrations caused by the TACC adjacent building, older standards that the CGP was built to, previous damage to the tank and seasonal fluctuations in the groundwater. Expert analysis could not determine the cause of soil settlement or tank failure.
