The backyard pool was a major factor in the purchase of this home by a young family 20 years ago. The pool was large and freeform, with plenty of room for children to splash around.

The pool was enjoyed by the family every summer. The backyard was a place where family, friends, and neighbours gathered.

The family has evolved. The children had grown and were busy with their own lives. Although the pool was still used, the days of diving and handstands are gone.

The backyard of these avid entertainers was not yet complete. They had at one time installed an outdoor television on the shed so they could watch soccer and golf matches while floating in their pool. They wanted to enjoy the outdoors for a long time. It was time to extend poolside afternoons into evenings. Friends and family were eager to enjoy the space well after sundown. After enjoying a pool for years, they wanted to add more outdoor features.

The quest began for the dream backyard renovation.

The client wanted to elevate the space by adding a storage pavilion, an outdoor dining area with a complete kitchen, and a spa.

To renovate or to remove?

The client was looking to upgrade the space by adding a storage pavilion, an outdoor kitchen and a hot-tub. The client’s existing pool was an older style, typical for its time, and took up a large portion of their backyard. This made the wish list more challenging. The yard has four different access points, which all need to be considered.

The setbacks of the township are always important to consider when designing a pool in a backyard with a structure. However, this particular property was more challenging because there is a city easement right behind it. The space of 9.1 x 15.2 m (30 x 50 ft) was beginning to feel tight.

It was not possible to save the pool due to the scope of work needed. A complete renovation became the best option.
