Reading Under a Rooftop Swimming Pool

China’s public libraries have a rooftop where visitors can explore a surprising water feature.

The Water Drop Library is crowned by a bowl-shaped pool, designed by 3andwich Design/He Wei Studio. To reach the pool, guests can take a secret path that leads to a set of stepping stone.

The studio states that people can see the ocean level by looking out over the pool. “Water, sky, and the sea are integrated right now.”

The entire structure, which was hidden in Guangdong Province’s hillsides, was integrated into one. The studio says that the white corridor and the long wall are artifacts of nature at the top of the hill. “The simple geometric shapes attracted the attention of users, leading them to the direction for the roof and the ocean.”

“A journey to understand nature” and “a journey to oneself” is the process of entering the building. Visitors must first walk down a corridor to enter the building. Then, they will “dive in” below the pool. Visitors are greeted by a stunning reading area, with nearly 270 degrees ceilings and glass. The bookshelves are placed in a circle along the inner wall. Small tables and seats line the outer glass wall. This gives you a grand view of the landscape.

The architects also included a ceiling opening that lets light through the roof pool. The studio explains that the color device renders the sunlight as colored light and scatters it into the space in blurred form.
