GeoLAGON Inc., a Quebec-based company, plans to build four energy-sparing tourist villages in Quebec. They will be located around the largest geothermal pool in the world.
Each pool or “lagoon” will be open-air and span 12,150 m 2 (130.781 sf) and heated to 39 C (102 F) during the year.
These villages will be made available to tourists via Airbnb-style short-term rentals. The lagoons will also be open for use from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. at night. To maintain their temperature and prevent water loss, they will be placed in a covered “night-tank” to keep them cool.
Four sources of energy will be used to power the residences and pools: photovoltaics embedded in the exterior of the accommodation, geothermal wells, solar photovoltaics and a biomass boiler with an 8,000 kW capacity. A heat accumulator is built under a thermal reservoir that can store 355,000 kWh at 70 C (158 F).
The villages can have a greater potential to exceed their energy needs, and excess energy can be transferred onto the electric grid.
Each village or pool will need a minimum investment amount of $325 million. This company is looking for investors and permits to build the first village or pool in Quebec’s Charlevoix egion along the St. Lawrence River.
“As an entrepreneur I made the decision to make a difference, to promote renewable energy in new ways: the self-sufficient model. Calypso Valcartier, Canada’s largest waterpark network, was my former CEO. Louis Massicotte, founder and owner geoLagon inc., said that he chose to build some four-season touristic communities across the country.
The company’s goal: To start construction on Quebec’s first village and lagoon before the summer 2023, and to open it for Christmas 2024.
