POOLCORP partners with YMCAs in order to provide life-saving swimming skills to underserved communities

POOLCORP and YMCAs are once again partnering to teach children life-saving skills of swimming. May marks the 20th annual National Water Safety Month, as well as the beginning of the summer swimming season.

POOLCORP is a leading wholesaler of swimming pool supplies, outdoor living products and pool tiles, finishes and hardscapes. Through its network of NPT Design Centers it has donated over $3 million to 21 different YMCAs across the country. The funds donated have helped provide free training to 2,000 lifeguards, and swimming lessons to more than 30,000 kids who would otherwise not have the opportunity.

Kendall Large, POOLCORP’s vice president for strategic marketing, says, “As a leading organization in the swimming pool sector, we believe everyone should be able to swim.” Our program is centered on a commitment to reach the children who are farthest away from this opportunity.

According to research, 79% of children living in households earning less than $50,000 do not have any or very little swimming ability. Just over a third (35%) of parents in the United States say that they can’t afford to pay for swimming lessons. POOLCORP’s partnership with the YMCA aims to close that gap by providing continued support through 2023.

POOLCORP has announced this year new partnerships with YMCAs located in California, Texas and South Carolina. POOLCORP employees play an important role in this program. POOLCORP employees provide new swimsuits and towels to ensure children can participate in swimming lessons.

Jennifer Neil, POOLCORP’s vice president and head of legal affairs, says: “We’re committed to making a positive difference in the communities we work and live in.” Neil said that learning to swim was not only a vital safety skill for children but also a great way to boost their confidence and pave the path to a happier, healthier future.

Gordon Wadge is the president and CEO of YMCA Greater New Orleans. He has been a part of POOLCORP’s swim safety program from its inception. Today, he continues to see a positive effect in the community. POOLCORP’s partnership with the YMCA is saving lives. “It’s so important, especially as we approach the summer swimming season,” Wadge says. Wadge added, “We want to ensure that every child is safe in and around the water. What better partnership than the YMCA and POOLCORP to achieve this goal?”
