Thieves stole a heat pump installed at a backyard pool from a house in the Rivière-des-Prairies neighbourhood in Montreal, shedding light on a pattern of similar robberies in the area.
According to a report by CBC News, the publication learned of similar heat pump robberies in the neighbourhood through social media posts. According to the same report, the resident was not expecting such an item to be stolen.
The report also explains how the resident’s neighbour was the one to inform about the theft because he had seen video footage from his security camera of intruders, who had originally come to steal the heat pump from his yard. According to the resident, the robbers chose to steal his heat pump instead as it appeared to be more expensive.
The identity of the robbers remains anonymous as they were concealed by hoodies, and the camera did not catch the license plate number of the thieves’ U-Haul truck.
The Montreal police service (SPVM) revealed to CBC News it is aware of the robberies and is investigating. Meanwhile, the police service has advised residents to maintain proper lighting in their backyards and add a security feature, such as an automatic timer, to build protection against robberies.
To amp up security in his backyard, the resident told CBC News he now has bolted the heat pump in his backyard to the ground and has installed a motion-sensor camera, and he hopes other residents will take similar enhanced security measures.
