Plumbing woes extend community pool closure

Fort Frances, Ont. locals face extended wait for Memorial Sports Centre pool reopening due to unexpected renovation hurdles.

Fort Frances, Ont., residents will have to wait longer before diving back into their local pool at Memorial Sports Centre as unforeseen challenges prolong its closure.

The pool, closed since November for repairs and rehabilitation, was expected to reopen in March or April but now aims for a late May or early June reopening.

According to a report by the Local Journalism Initiative, issues with plumbing and structural columns have surfaced during renovations, extending the reopening timeline by several weeks.

Initially intended as a water line replacement project, complications arose when it was discovered that both the skimmer and jet water lines were stacked atop each other, necessitating a full system overhaul. Further, deteriorated structural columns required more extensive repair work than anticipated, leading to more delays.

A statement from the town acknowledged the frustration caused by the delay, while emphasizing the main goal of guaranteeing the pool’s safety and viability in the long run.
