Ontario pool to undergo retrofit for late summer reopening

Pembroke’s Kinsmen Pool gears up for a $1.4 million summer revival after safety shutdown.

The Kinsmen Pool in Pembroke, Ont., closed for safety concerns in early 2024, is slated for a transformative retrofit in anticipation of a summer reopening.

The repair budget, totaling $1.4 million, includes additional works with a tender expected in the second quarter.

According to report by the Pembroke Observer, Bel-Con Design Builders LTD. has been awarded a contract of just over $1 million, with an additional contingency allowance of $150,000. The company’s proposal was chosen for its high evaluation score and cost-effectiveness.

The report further states the project involves replacing the pool’s walls and roof, retaining existing columns and beams after repairs to any corroded sections, and the installation of the mechanical and electrical components.

Marielle McLaughlin, manager of operations for the committee, presented the committee with a repair timeline, anticipating four to six weeks for design work and material ordering, followed by approximately four months of construction.

The construction phase will involve six to eight weeks for demolition and removal of old systems, spray foam cleanup, followed by three to four weeks each for installing the new roof and walls.

McLaughlin projects completion by late August or early September. Post retrofit, the facility will seek approval from Pembroke’s Parks and Recreation Committee.
