Laurentian University in Sudbury is going to run some tests on its Jeno Tihanyi Olympic Gold Pool to ascertain its repair costs. The pool has remained closed since March 2020, when it was shut down because of the pandemic.
The university’s financial problems did not allow for the reopening of the pool. In February 2021, the university gave a public notice of its insolvency and in April 2021, it stopped offering 72 of its programs.
The university was able to get out of its insolvency proceedings based on the companies’ creditors arrangement act (CCAA) in November 2022, and it could then focus on restructuring and bringing back the programs it had left.
The university’s interim president says the test results will be made public by April 30. The tests will fill the pool up to determine whether the valves and the pumps are still in running condition.
The president said it was not likely for the university to commit to any level of repairs, depending on its own, and outside financial help will be necessary.
In May 2022, Ontario’s government announced a purchase worth $53.5 million of the university’s land or buildings, but then there has been no update to the announcement ever since.
Jeno Tihanyi Olympic Gold Pool is the only pool between Toronto and Thunder Bay in Ontario, and there are hardly any other Olympic-sized pools in Northern Ontario. A lot of cities in the region depended on the pool to conduct large swim meets and training for local, national, and international competitions.
