Few people have achieved the same level of success in outdoor living and pool design as Danny Wang. His firm, DW Design & Build, is located in Orange County, CA. It has earned a reputation for being one of the most respected design firms. Wang’s unique ability to help homeowners design their perfect outdoor living space has earned him numerous awards.

Danny Wang is almost a household-name in the pool design industry due to his uncanny ability of imagining complete outdoor living designs on-the-fly. He has a rare talent that allows him to see inside a home to envision the possibilities for a complete renovation.

Wang said, “I don’t free-style it but it’s almost as if when I walk into someone’s backyard an image literally pops up in me and I see it.” The designs usually take 5 to 15 minutes to complete once I have walked through the yard with the homeowner.

“It is probably based upon all my experience. Wang said that after building so many pools you have a good idea of what should and shouldn’t be included in the design.

Wang said that he has been allowing homeowners to give him full creative freedom to design their backyard. This is how we screen clients to see if they are willing to participate in the design process. He explained that while that is fine, we prefer people who know they have hired me to create a award-winning pool for them and are confident that I will get the job done correctly.

“I doubt every designer can say that confidently. Because we’re building a complex pool, only a few people can do it. Wang stated that this is why we often build our own projects.

“Ofcourse, it’s my house. So what we need to do is take into consideration what they want. Wang said that we take the elements of discovery and create a design around them.

Wang claims that he gets inspiration from the work of Paul McClean and others in architecture. “I believe pushing the boundaries is important. It’s about seeing what’s possible artistically and technologically. What has no one seen before? That motivates me to be creative in design and build. This makes it more satisfying and drives me,” Wang said.

I get inspiration just by looking at other places. Wang explained, “I would look at resorts in Bali, Mexico and other parts of the globe and try to understand the different design languages.”

Wang didn’t have it all easy. He let us know that he made the same mistake as many other design firms when he became well-known. “I believe that 2017 was a time when I had a lot more business. As many people make, I took on too much. At that time, I had 50 projects in my backlog, and was working on 30 projects simultaneously. Wang said that it was quite brutal and that we were losing money all the time.

Wang stated that in order to regain his sanity, he was forced by backlog to complete projects. Wang explained that he couldn’t build for two years due to the sheer number of projects he had in backlog. “I didn’t have enough time to design so I did my projects during day and then went home and designed for others at night.”

“That was around the same time I started social media. Wang said that people would see our designs through social media, and it just kinda took off from there.”

Wang’s visionary designs have been appreciated not only by the pool industry, but also by the general public. He has a large social media following and plans to use his brand in exciting new ways.

“Our content is both entertaining and educational. Social media is a great way to learn new things, and we have an international audience. It was surprising to me that there are so many types of building techniques and elements throughout the world. It was really eye-opening and it taught me a lot. Wang said that she also sees other people learning a lot through the content I produce, and that’s very fascinating to her.

We asked Wang about the trending design trends. Wang is often eager to share the latest design trends with his social media followers. I think water features should be bigger and more elaborate. We are using more lighting than the on-and off lights that most people are used too. We are using smart lighting to control water feature lighting. This adds an entirely new dimension to the design. DMX lighting that changes the color of the water features with music. The pool can be lit up with LEDs and it can even become a stage for music.

It’s evident that people are very excited about Wang’s backyard project, as evidenced by the millions of shares and likes he is receiving. Wang stated, “You don’t see these kinds of things happening in your backyard.”

Wang’s collection of luxurious resort-style luxury swimming pools is growing almost as fast as his social media followers. Wang stated that he intends to make the brand a household name. “We are kind of getting into product design. We’re currently in talks with fire pit and tile manufacturers. We are also planning to develop our own outdoor and indoor product lines. Wang said that there are many exciting things happening.
