ORLANDO, Florida Ocean Sports Development, Inc. and OCE West Orange, LLC announced today plans to develop an international surfing destination at OCE’s site located at 7902 Avalon Road, next to the Orange County National Golf Center, in Horizon West. OSD Chairman Anthony Brown said, “Our proposed Orlando Surf Park offers the public a unique recreational experience, while also providing a modern venue for surfer practice, competition, and training at all levels.”
The project, which will cost $45 million, will feature a 15-acre pool of surf featuring wave technology that was developed and patented Greg Webber. The Webber Wave Pool will use programmable flow control to create an artificial reef, creating a surf environment with wave shapes and size that will be industry-leading. The wave systems are patented and will be mass-produced component-integrated, ensuring cost-effective system construction, operation, maintenance, and repair.
A sand boardwalk and beach will surround the surf pool. Other amenities include an event pavilion and a 27,000 square-foot athletic training facility. The complex will include a BC Surf & Sport Superstore as well as retail shops, a dining area, and two tiki bar, all set in a casual tropical setting. The outdoor experience will allow spectators to watch individual surfers and competition events live on two 700-foot-wide video screens.
There will be generous buffers along the perimeter of the park, as well lush interior landscaping and on-site parking available for both guests and teams.
Brown said that the developers were committed to turning the former landfill into an environmentally-safe, ecologically-advanced community asset. The pool will be lined with a geosynthetic material and have an underlay made of sand, clay and bentonite. A solar grid will run the equipment for wave generation and modern water treatment systems are going to provide surface water re-use. All systems will form the core of academic programs at high schools and colleges.
250 workers are expected to be employed during the construction phase. The park will create 150 permanent positions once it opens. Sports Facilities Companies of Clearwater FL, industry experts, project that Orange County will benefit from a direct and indirect multimillion dollar impact from the first year of operation.
Orlando Surf Park will attract surfers from all over the world. However, Brown’s development team is committed to the local community. “Our initiatives include lifeguard training and first responder courses, veteran wellness, swim and surfing lessons for kids, school fieldtrips, and internships at colleges.” The park will also serve as a regional surfing training facility and the future home of the National Surfing League TM.
