National Apprenticeship Week Celebrated by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance

National Apprenticeship Week is being celebrated by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, November 14-20. National Apprenticeship Week highlights the importance of Registered Apprenticeship Programs and how they help to build our nation’s talent pool. PHTA will be sharing updates about the PHTA Registered pool maintenance and service technician apprenticeship program (tm). This program was launched in August 2021 .

The PHTA Apprenticeship program is the only national program for the hot tub, spa and pool industry registered with the U.S. Department of Labor. This allows the pool industry to compete with other industries that also need entry-level talent. The program is available to PHTA members at no cost. It combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training and skills-based education.

A registered apprenticeship program allows pool maintenance and service to be considered a skilled trade. This opens up the door for high school guidance counselors, veterans and community workforce boards.

PHTA is proud to announce that 23 companies in 15 states are currently enrolled in the apprenticeship program. Nearly 30 apprentices have started their on-the job training. Apprentices can access 182 hours of education online through the PHTA’s online education portal.

These are the companies that are currently enrolled:

  • Anderson Poolworks, Wilsonville (OR)
  • Mt. Sinai, NY
  • Atlantic Solutions, Chapel Hill (NC)

Sabeena Hickman CAE, President & Chief Executive Officer of PHTA, stated that “we consistently hear from PHTA member that workforce development, employee recruitment, and retention are top business concerns.” There are so many career opportunities in the pool and hot tub industry. We are focused on not only communicating that message but also actively developing these apprentices to become skilled, qualified workers who can be valued as industry professionals. We are proud that the PHTA Registered pool maintenance and service technician apprenticeship program is available to members. We hope more people will take advantage of it in the next year.

PHTA and its Apprenticeship task force are also currently working on a second apprenticeship program to train pool construction workers. PHTA looks forward to launching the new program in 2023.
