Kathy Hochul, the Governor of New York State has announced a $16-million initiative to turn New York State’s natural waterbodies into swimming paradises using + POOL’s innovative technology.

The project is a visionary one that aims to create the first urban swimming facility on a river in the U.S. This will mark a historical leap in aquatic infrastructure for the public.

This summer, the collaboration between the state, + POOL and a nonprofit will begin with the installation of an 186-m 2 version of the water-filtering plus-shaped pool in New York City’s river system.

The + POOL incorporates an advanced filtration system that can clean more than 3,78 million litres (1 million gals) of water every day, without using chemicals or additives. The + POOL design not only provides a safe access for the public to New York waters, but it also aligns itself with the Clean Water Act. The project will evaluate different sites in the state to determine if similar pools can be installed.

+POOL can be reconfigured for lap swimming, relaxing, watersports and children’s activity. The different configurations can be used individually, combined into an Olympic-length swimming pool or completely opened to create a 835-m 2 (9,000 sf) play pool.

Friends of + POOL is the nonprofit that created the initiative. They have designed a filtration device to bring raw river water up to a microbiological standard acceptable for swimming. The design has been patented. The team used the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP), version 8.1 (EPA, 2018a), water quality modelling software to model the system. This ensured + POOL water quality without using chemical disinfectants.

The upcoming public demonstration this summer will provide New York State with essential data and Friends of + POOL the final data they need to secure permits and approve the installation of the pool.
