Inuvik’s pool is once again closed indefinitely. This comes just two months after the pool reopened earlier this year, following a three-year hiatus. The closure is due to a recommendation by the Northwest Territories Environmental Health office.
A report by Cabin radio states that the town announced a new closure on Wednesday. This was two weeks after the residents were informed the sealant in the pool had started to come off and cause problems. According to the report, the town advised swimmers not to lean or rub against the seams of the pool walls to minimize the problem.
NNSL media reported that the notice of closure by the territorial government stated the government was looking for alternative solutions to the problem, which did not include shutting it down. The issue would be addressed during the annual maintenance in September. The pool sealant stains the bathing suits of visitors, which led to an immediate response.
According to the report, even though there was no evidence of health risks, the pool was closed out of caution. Cabin radio reports that the pool supplier suggested the leak was caused by a defective batch of sealant. In other pools the sealant works properly.
There is currently no timeline on how long this closure will last. However, the municipality is actively looking for ways to solve the problem.
