Once a year the Master Pools Guild holds its Excellence Awards contest during which members from across the globe submit their completed projects. There is a feeling of unity and pride in the process as entries are judged by volunteer MPG members and scored on a scale from zero to a hundred (or over in special cases). Additional points for “truly exceptional work” are an option. The entry with the highest score is named the Grand International Excellence award winner of which there is only one.
For 2024, 38 of the Guild’s 104 member companies were recognized with award-winning entries. The 2024 sponsor for the contest was Pentair Pool.
Custom Pool Systems, headquartered in Coral Gables, Florida submitted the highest-scoring project, a stunning geometric vanishing edge pool. At the helm of Custom Pool Systems sit Cesar Cortez and Jeremy Guillen who were invited to join the Master Pools Guild early this year.

Shortly after winning, Cesar Cortez was quoted as saying: “Receiving this year’s top Excellence Award from the Master Pools Guild, particularly as newcomers in this prestigious circle, is incredibly meaningful to us. It represents recognition from those we most admire and look up to in our industry—our accomplished peers who understand the complexity and artistry of what we do. This honor not only celebrates our commitment to excellence but, also encourages us to uphold the high standards of innovation and quality that the Guild embodies.”
Cortez also elaborated on the process of building a pool and spa on the client’s roof, both additional elements of this expansive outdoor space:
“This project was extraordinary, not just in scope but in the complexities involved. Building the world’s largest terrazzo vanishing edge pool and spa, stretching an impressive 116 feet, posed unique technical challenges, particularly in ensuring structural integrity and flawless execution of the vanishing edge design. Additionally, the construction of another vanishing edge pool and spa on the roof, made from stainless steel and tile, required meticulous planning and execution to handle the engineering demands of supporting significant weight at such a height. The completion of this project over five years is a proud milestone for CPS Outdoors, showcasing our ability to overcome challenging engineering feats and reflecting our deep commitment to craftsmanship and client satisfaction”.
MPG’s newly seated Chairman of the Board, Joshua Buzzell, leads an initiative for MPG to add to the membership at levels much higher than in past years. Buzzell commented on the Custom Pool Systems win “Custom Pools Systems are one of my favorite builders in the world. Their attention to detail and the complexity of some of their projects is fun to see come together. Jeremy & Cesar are stand-up guys and are really making a big impact in the watershape world. The Master Pools Guild is so happy to have them as a part of our amazing family of builders.”

Teri Wiltshire, MPG Executive Director shared “There are so many aspects of this project that I think are amazing but, to me, it comes down to this – integrating a home with it’s outdoor space to meet or exceed the client’s expectations is always the goal. CPS Outdoors created a seamless indoor/outdoor living environment that includes luxury resort amenities in a multi-level project. Five years is a massive investment of time and talent, but this is certainly a company willing to play the long game and we are proud to have them as members.”
