Pool Magazine was proud to be a sponsor of this 2022’s Million-Dollar Pool Design Challenge at Las Vegas’ PSP Deck Expo. Rance Schindler, an up-and-coming designer, won the $10,000 prize with his winning entry. Riverflow Pumps by Current Systems was the sponsor.
The annual competition was created by Mike Farley, and Reid Schindler. It promotes cutting-edge backyard ideas and removes financial constraints. The competition invites designers to create an outdoor paradise for clients with a budget of at least a million dollars.
The 2022 competition required that entrants create an outdoor living space for a Chicago-based husband-and-wife team of lawyers. This competition required the creation of a space that prioritized self-care, health, and wellness to create the perfect backyard for these clients.
Submissions must include a few wish-list items.

Although there were many entrants to the Million-Dollar Pool Design Challenge it was a very popular event. Only a few people were invited to Las Vegas for their talents. The PoolHaus’s Brent Dutton, Old State Landscapes’ Whitney Morris and Stephanie Carnahan and Complete Exterior Solutions’ Rance Scheindler were all finalists. Brad Holley from Randy Angell Designs, AquaTerra Outdoors’ Minsung, Karishma Karki and Paola Hidalgo and SameepaModi, both from AquaTerra Outdoors, were also finalists.
An expert panel of judges evaluated entries based on these factors:
1. Aesthetic quality – Does the form of the concept look pleasant?
2. Difference – Is this concept “fresh” and unique?
3. Functionality Does the concept meet the requirements of the family? Does the concept consider all elements of site analysis?
4. Realization Possibility– Can the concept be built if the client decides to proceed with construction? ie. ie.
Let’s look at the winning design for this year by Rance Schindler, Complete Exterior Solutions. Shade was one of the requirements of the client.
This design addresses that need with a large tree that shades the outdoor living area and becomes the central focal point in the backyard.
The design plan includes a rooftop dining area and conversation area, as well as an outside kitchen.
The entire outdoor space is dominated by a beautiful glass deck that looks out over the fire pit and pool.
