A chlorine gas leak in the pool of the Delta Hotel, located downtown St John’s (Newfoundland and Labrador), forced its guests to evacuate. Six people were transported to hospital after their evacuation.

When water was added, it caused the chlorine to release a toxic gas. Someone at the scene saw several people getting sick in the pool. They called 911 and St. John’s Regional Fire Department, along with ambulances, firefighters, and police cars, rushed to the area. The fire department then pulled the alarm to evacuate the entire hotel.

Some guests were wrapped up in blankets and towels on the sidewalk, while firefighters worked to ventilate the building so that the poisonous gases could be released.

According to Paul Chaytor, Deputy Chief of Police, those exposed to the gas had respiratory problems. Six people were transported to hospital as a result of being in the pool. George Street United Church was used as a gathering place for the evacuees, and the convention center served as a warming center.
