Inuvik’s public swimming pool in Midnight Sun Complex in Northwest Territories is expected to reopen around Mar. 18, after being closed for three years due to the pandemic and complications with renovation work.
The pool had faced problems with leaks and shifting foundations, among other issues. However, Grant Hood, the town’s senior administrator, informed the councilors the pool does not have the issues it faced before. Its pumps and heating system are now in working condition and are expected to remain so in the future. Lifeguards are now acquiring their certification before it reopens.
The town faced several false reopening dates, but this time, the pool is ready to welcome the public after the final health inspection on Friday, 10 Mar. 2023. Due to staffing shortage, the number of people allowed in the pool at once may be limited to around 50, similar to Yellowknife, where a lifeguard shortage has also been reported. Staff at the Yellowknife pool claimed the shortage to be a national issue.
