HVAC Equipment Collapses On Pool Injuring 6 People

On Saturday, several people were injured when HVAC equipment at the Gaylord Rockies Resort Aurora collapsed. Aurora Fire Rescue has stated that the resort will investigate the collapse, despite the fact that two people suffered serious injuries. Six people were reported injured by the agency. Two of those individuals were taken to hospital to receive treatment.

Aurora Fire Chief Alec Oughton told the press at a press conference that followed the incident, the Gaylord management team was responsible for the investigation. He stressed that the investigation was not being conducted by the fire department, but instead an internal investigation of the resort in order to determine what happened and find answers.

A guest told news outlets the resort had been evacuated when a fire alarm went off. A witness observed a child being treated for injuries on the pool deck. The equipment that collapsed was a pool duct.

The witness recorded video of the injured being cared for at the indoor swimming pool deck. A second person stated that resort staff had told them that there was a ventilation problem and at least two victims.

Trevor Spykerman a 12-year old resort guest, who was on the scene, said that the collapse took about 15 seconds. He described the event as taking place in slow motion. The 12-year-old resort guest, Trevor Spykerman, reported that no one was injured in the collapse. However he did notice a man who had red marks on his body shortly after. Paramedics and resort staff evacuated the building immediately after responding to the incident.

The Fire Chief Oughton stated that the initial call of a collapsed structure was received at 9 :50 am. Some units were already inside the hotel doing training and they were the first ones to respond. There were between 50 and 100 people in the pool area at the time. It is not known what caused the incident. Gaylord Rockies’ management and the fire department have begun investigations into this incident. No imminent collapse is a threat.
