Hurricane Nicole unleashes a second round of devastation in Florida

It is not common for November hurricanes to hit Florida so to say that Hurricane Nicole was an unexpected event would be an understatement. Although most Florida residents are still recovering from the destruction caused by Hurricane Ian, Mother Nature has let us know that Hurricane season isn’t over yet. After making landfall in Florida yesterday afternoon, Hurricane Nicole was quickly downgraded to a hurricane. However, it did not kill two people due to an outage on a powerline.

As of Thursday morning, more than 335,000 Florida homes and businesses were without power. Governor De Santis extended a state of emergency to all 67 counties with recommended and voluntary evacuation orders for Brevard, Clay, Seminole, St. John’s, Putnam and Franklin counties and mandatory evacuation orders for Flagler and Volusia counties. A tropical storm warning was issued for the Florida coast, from Sebastian Inlet in Florida to the South Santee River of South Carolina.

Kim Stenson, director, state emergency management division, advised that residents should have emergency plans in place in order to be prepared for the unpredictable storm’s strength as it approaches South Carolina.

Parts of northern, eastern, and central Florida could see 8 in. of rain through Saturday. The hurricane center also predicts that rainfall will reach 2-6 inches in the southeast United States, from the southern and central Appalachians to the western mid-Atlantic.

Residents of Florida have been particularly affected by the hurricane season.

Unexpectedly, Hurricane Nicole struck right after Ian. Nicole was the first hurricane to make landfall in the United States during November in almost 40 years. Florida is not a stranger to hurricanes. However, only two hurricanes, the 1935 Yankee Hurricane, and the 1985 Hurricane Kate made landfall in November, since official records began.
