Making the most of resources to stay ahead of the competition
Hunter Smith has been running his own pool service company in the San Diego area since 2016. He says his business, Pool Smith, has grown exponentially over the last few years and he attributes a large part of his success to being a member of IPSSA. In particular, Hunter has taken advantage of IPSSA’s Education Fund which is designed specifically to subsidize the cost of training and education courses so that Hunter can differentiate himself from competitors in his region.
“One of things that distinguishes me from other service professionals, is the fact that I am backed by industry associations,” says Smith. “I put the logo-patches of my IPSSA and CPO certification on the gear I wear to work so that I am continuously promoting my professionalism and education.”
Smith explains that he has been an IPSSA member for the past 2 years and has been sure to utilize all the tools they offer to self-employed service professionals.
“I was particularly attracted to IPSSA not only because it provides sick-route coverage and insurance, but it’s commitment to the education of its members, backed by financial support.”
Smith has been reimbursed for education courses in water chemistry as well as trainings and courses through the PHTA and trade show education offered through the Western Pool and Spa Show.
“The process of getting reimbursed for class expenses is super simple and easy,” says Smith. “And everything I learn I am able to immediately integrate into my business so that I can offer more services to my clients and allow me to increase my profits.
“When I first walk into a potential client’s backyard, I point out my IPSSA membership and CPO certification that are sewn onto my work gear and promoted on my cap,” explains Smith. “The majority of my clients mention that my professional associates and knowledge of their pool equipment and water chemistry are the reasons they chose me over my competition.”
The IPSSA Education Fund provides funds to lower the costs of courses such as Certified Pool Operator courses, Aquatics Facility Operator courses, contractor license courses, manufacturer sponsored courses, courses provided at industry trade shows as well as business and trade school courses. “IPSSA wants all self-employed pool and spa service professionals seeking to advance their professional training and education to have less of a financial burden doing so,” says Rose Smoot, Executive Director of IPSSA. “It’s good for the industry as a whole if our pool and spa service professionals are more educated in the field.”
