A passionate community effort is underway to rescue Halifax’s beloved Centennial Pool from potential closure.
According to a report by CTV News Atlantic, spearheaded by the Save Centennial Pool committee, the members passionately presented their case at city hall last week, challenging a 2022 motion to replace the aging pool with a new 50-m (164-ft) pool off the Halifax peninsula.
The report continues in saying that the Save Centennial Pool Committee member, Trevor Brumwell, emphasized the motion’s one-sided nature during a presentation at the community planning and economic development standing committee. He argued the decision lacked proper public consultation, urging the council to reconsider and explore alternatives to maintain the iconic Gottingen Street pool in the heart of Halifax.
The report further states that while highlighting the pool’s significance for competitive swimmers and various aquatic groups, Brumwell also stressed the growing demand for swimming facilities in the city. The committee has gathered more than 1,200 signatures on a petition and presented viable options for preserving the existing site.
As per the report, despite an imminent report on the pool’s future, the committee, backed by supportive councillors, such as Trish Purdy, remains determined to explore all the possibilities.
The Centennial Pool, a hub for more than 1,460 monthly visitors and various aquatic activities, holds sentimental value for many residents, including aquafit instructor Nancy Mahoney.
While acknowledging the need for a new pool, councillor Sam Austin reassured the community that no final decision has been made, emphasizing a comprehensive examination of alternatives before a decision is reached. The councillor explained this process is expected to span several years, ensuring the cherished pool will not face closure soon.
