Fredericton is currently working with the region to build a new aquatic center. However, there is not yet a clear timeline for when it will be ready, which could delay its opening for many years.
Discussions about a new pool were initiated in 2012 when the Sir Max Aitken pool at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), was closed.
According to CBC the executive director of Regional Service Commission said that he expects to issue a request for proposals (RFP) to architects within the next few weeks. According to him, the municipality and neighboring municipalities spent a lot last year on establishing a governance structure. The commission is currently working to create an RFP framework for companies to submit proposals. The location and design of the pool are still to be determined.
“There have been many locations that have been discussed over the years. The Regional Service Commission’s executive director says that the Grant-Harvey Centre is the most recently discussed location. “When we discuss location, the size and what would be included in the facility, all that will be decided during the design phase.”
The director stated that the commission had spoken to both the federal and provincial governments about funding. However, nothing has been forthcoming. There is another option: UNB could keep its pool open; however, it will eventually have to close.
Chris Ramsey, president, Fredericton Regional Aquatic Centre, (FRAC), emphasized the need for a new pool because, despite two pools, the Fredericton Indoor Pool, and the YMCA swimming pool, there is a lack of space for youth in the area.
