Edmonton has changed its swimwear policy to allow adults and minors to swim naked in public pools. This change was made in order to encourage inclusion and comply with Alberta’s human rights laws.
This policy only applies to pools that are run by the city of Edmonton. It does not apply to public recreation facilities or pools managed by other organizations. Although the website says that “all patrons” are eligible for topless service, the city confirmed that the policy is only applicable to 18-year-olds. The city is currently considering whether to extend the policy to minors.
Although the changes have received mixed reactions, diversity and inclusion consultants see them as an opportunity to create safe and inclusive spaces for all swimmers. While the city understands that some may not like the policy, they will still allow topless swimming in their pool.
