The East Hants Aquatic Centre, located in Elmsdale in Nova Scotia, was closed due to flooding caused by heavy rains in the second half July. According to the Municipality of East Hants spokesperson, the opening time of the centre is still uncertain.
A spokesperson told The Laker News that the timeline of the reopening could only be determined after the cleaning process. After the dehumidification and cleanup procedures, a further inspection is required to determine the condition of the mechanical and electrical systems as well as their associated repair costs.
A spokesperson for the municipality explained that the flooding was caused by a large volume of water infiltrating the stormwater system around and in the Aquatic Centre. The basement, where the electrical systems, mechanical systems, pool tanks and heating system are located, was inundated with water up to several feet deep.
In a report by Global News the East Hants warden reaffirmed the spokesperson’s statement that the pool’s equipment was in the basement, where the flooding occurred. According to the warden, the extent of damage to the mechanical gear cannot be determined at this time, because it’s too early. However, the pool will stay closed for now.
The Special Hazard Response Unit, the Fire Service, and MEH staff worked together to minimize the damage over the weekend by removing water and stabilizing the chemicals in the building. The primary focus at the moment is cleaning up the mess left behind by the floodwater.
The closure of the facility will affect a variety of programs. The cancellation of aquatics programs such as aquafit and swim lessons. Splash camps and day camp are among the summer recreational programs that will be relocated. Refunds will be given to those who have opted out of their enrollment.
