URB, a sustainable development company, has revealed its plans for Dubai Reefs. This floating living laboratory for marine restoration, ecotourism and tourism will cover 199 km 2 (77 miles 2). It will feature over 1 billion corals as well as over 100,000,000 mangrove trees.
Dubai Reefs is a community that focuses on marine research, regeneration and ecotourism. The project will include residential, retail, education, and research facilities. The marine institute, which will work towards greater protection of Dubai’s marine and coastal environment, will be at the center of the project. The project aims to increase the capacity of Dubai in marine science and conservation, while building the largest artificial reef.
This project will provide unique marine ecotourism experiences, including floating eco lodges powered by renewable energy sources such as solar and hydropower. Wave farms will produce clean energy to meet the growing needs of the city. The project also includes regenerative ocean farming, a technique for climate-friendly food production.
Baharash Baherian, the CEO of the company, stressed the importance of this project for Dubai as well as other coastal cities that are at risk from rising sea levels.
Bagherian said, “The ocean controls everything.” A healthy ocean is the same as a healthy city, given that everything on this planet is interconnected. If we do not act now, our oceans will look completely different at the end of this century. In the planning and development of coastal cities, we need to be entrepreneurial in our approach. Dubai is the best-positioned city to lead this transformation. Dubai Reefs is a destination that will be a model for ocean living and ecotourism, while also mitigating climate change.
