Understanding and incorporating design elements can take your business to a new level

The hot tub, pool, and spa industry is always evolving. Continuing education is essential to stay up-to-date on the latest techniques, trends, and equipment. Many industry education courses are focused on more technical topics, such as engineering, construction, and water quality. However, pool design is an equally important but often overlooked topic.

GENESIS (r), a member of the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, will celebrate its 25 th year in 2023. GENESIS (r) is a premier pool industry educational program. Its faculty and instructors are highly-regarded and teach courses in four areas: Business, Construction, Design, and Engineering. The design curriculum offers more than 30 courses ranging from color theory, drawing and photography to landscape architecture and photography. Six of the courses in the design curriculum are part of PHTA Certified Pool Designer and Builder Professional Pathway. This career path builds on your knowledge base and leads to four professional certification levels.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career without GENESIS(r), education,” says Mike Farley Elite Design Consultant at Claffey Pools, Southlake, TX. Farley has been a Certified Master Pool Designer and Builder (Master CBP), and taking GENESIS(r), courses for more than two decades.

The more information in your mind, the better you will be able to create. Designers are called to create, he says. “Clients do not hire a pool company, they hire a designer.”

Master CBP John Kenyon took his first GENESIS class in 2012. The Elements of Design class changed the way he thinks about pools. The spatial exercises open your mind up to the possibilities.

Students are required to draw a design for every space in D211: Elements of Design. This includes a lawn, patio, fire pit, fireplace, or spa. Students (and their clients when they use this technique on their next project) may be surprised at how many elements fit into a single space.

Kenyon says, “GENESIS(r), education has meant everything to me.” Over the past decade, I’ve developed an understanding of space use, architecture and how to design a house. The GENESIS(r), design courses opened my eyes to colors, patterns, textures, and edge flicker. “My expertise and training gives my clients the comfort of knowing that they are working with someone educated.”

More than one GENESIS (r) student has called D231: Color Theory & Its Applications “mind-blowing”. Feras Irikat is the Director of Design and marketing for Lunada Bay Tile. He says this course will help students to explain to clients why certain design choices make sense, not just from an aesthetic standpoint. When you tell your client, “Look how beautiful these colors look together,” that’s just one thing. You are a design professional when you can say, “Look at these colors together. They create this mood, and they create an impact, and they bring functionality to the room.” “Clients are happy to see that.”

Andy Kaner, Master CBP, teaches D180, Drawing for Professionals. Kaner is the President of Aquatic consultants, Inc., and has been working with Genesis (r) cofounder Brian Van Bower since 1992. He teaches his students to use drawing as a tool for communication, not only for clients but for other professionals, such as landscape architects and engineers. Kaner says that this course provides students with the tools and templates they need to create a plan. No previous drawing experience is needed, as D180 provides all the necessary experience. Students will learn the basics of using pencils, pens and paper, then move on to understanding the symbols and methods that other designers use.
