Both pool owners and experienced pool operators are plagued by cloudy water. Cloudy water can be a disappointment to pool owners who have just returned from a long period of absence or dampen excitement at the spring opening. This can happen just before an algae bloom or a few weeks after a major storm or pool party. Cloudy water is not only uninviting but can also indicate serious problems that require investigation. Cloudy water may interfere with visibility. Cloudy water can be dangerous to swimmers.
To ensure the best swimming conditions for your family, keep track of the water balance and schedule, including sanitizers, cleaning and oxidizing. This will prevent expensive and frustrating pool repairs. The 2023 swimming season is fast approaching. Here are some strategies for treating and preventing cloudy water.
Definition of cloudy water
The pool industry measures turbidity by measuring the amount of particles suspended in the water. This is measured in nephelometric units (NTU). In the Pool & Spa Operator Manual of the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), it is recommended that pool water turbidity be kept at or below 1 NTU, especially during peak season.
For interventions to be able reduce it below 0.5 NTU within eight hours. If pool owners or operators do not have the necessary instruments to measure turbidity in the pool, they can simply stand on the deck and inspect the surface of the pool. Steps, the deep end and the main drain of the pool should be easily visible. It can be dangerous for users if they cannot see these structures.
Understanding the Cause
The problem can be solved by identifying the cause and returning to normal operation. To improve circulation, remove any visible debris from the water or skimmers. It will also remove any distractions and prevent organic stains. Water testing can reveal any issues with chemical imbalances, low residuals of sanitizer, or oxidizer requirements. Understanding the health and function of the circulation system and filtering system is important, even if it is a problem related to any of these.
Adequate circulation of water and filtration
It is crucial to keep the water flowing in a swimming pool for the proper distribution of chemicals. Wind-borne debris, alga spores and swimmer waste tend to accumulate near the surface, where disinfectant residue is usually at its lowest. The water is then passed through the skimmer and into the filter, where the undissolved particles are removed. The water can then be passed through any chemical feeders or sanitizers, where the sanitizer will be added.
