In Verona, a mass chlorine poisoning incident took place in a swimming pool located in Italy’s Bosco Chiesanuova municipal. Officially, 25 people were hurt, including children as young three-years old. After the incident, all those affected were admitted to hospital.
The Monti Lessini Sports Centre saw a large emergency response to the incident. Paramedics, firefighters and cops arrived on the scene. The NBCR (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical and Radiological), a specialized firefighting team, was also present.
The pool had been contaminated by chlorine gas, which was released at 10 a.m. Experts were called to assist in the evacuation. According to the Ministry of the Interior of Italy, the NBCR operatives is a “specialized group of firefighters that can be called to intervene when necessary.” The gas caused serious injuries to several people. Some were transported to Negrar, Borgo Trento and Borgo Roma hospitals, while others were driven to minibuses to the nearest medical center.
Nine of the 25 people who died were children in nursery schools, aged between 3 to 6. They were there for a lesson on swimming. The toxic gas also caused severe injuries to four swimmers and hospitalized the manager of the pool. According to investigations, the poisoning was caused by a miscalculation regarding the chlorine required to sterilize the pool. According to local media, a large overdose of chlorine caused a cloud of toxic gas to rise from the water and poison swimmers.
This incident recalls a similar situation at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor 2021. After the release of chemicals from the pool, 65 people were rushed to hospital because their water filtration system was not installed correctly.
Inhaling chlorine gas can cause death. It was used as a weapon by the Germans in World War I. Victims may experience blurred vision, shortness of breath and burning sensations in their nose, eyes, throats, and throats.
This isn’t the only case of poisoning this year. hundreds were also ill at Iran’s schools after being poisoned with chemical compounds. These attacks also involved chlorine gas, and victims suffered similar symptoms to those in Italy.
