Chlorine Explosion Damages Pool at Providence, RI

North Providence Pool and Fitness Center is closed until further notice because of an apparent chlorine explosion last week.

North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi said that residents initially believed the explosion was caused by a quake. The confusion was exacerbated by reports of the building shaking and the lights flickering.

The building and library adjacent to it were evacuated as a precaution while the authorities investigated. The library has reopened but the pool and fitness centre will remain closed for the foreseeable future.

The investigation ruled out an earthquake and a natural gas leak. The explosion was caused by a buildup underground of chlorine gas. The dangerous buildup of gas underground had reached a crucial point, releasing the explosive force which wreaked havoc at the facility.

The explosion’s destructive force was clearly visible, as it propelled the hot-tub approximately four feet in the air and left a hole on the floor. The walls of the building were also scarred by the explosion, with visible cracks running through the structure.

While the investigators assess the extent and severity of the damage to the pool, they are most concerned about the safety of public. At the time of explosion, the pool and spa were drained. Authorities expressed concern that this accident could have been drastically different if they had been operating.

At this point, the reopening date of the North Providence Pool and Fitness Center is uncertain as investigators work diligently to minimize risks and determine the full extent of the damage. Mayor Lombardi stressed that safety is the top priority, and the building may not be able to accommodate visitors for a few more weeks.

These explosions with chlorine may be rare, but they are a reminder of the dangers that lurk in pool facilities. These incidents are rare but they highlight the importance of following robust safety protocols and maintaining pool facilities regularly.
