The public pool at Greenwood Park in Toronto had to close on its summer season opening weekend after broken glass was found in the swimming area, causing injuries to a child.
According to a report by Global News, the same weekend, the pool had to be closed several times because of the broken glass.
Parents were left frustrated and worried about the wellbeing of their children, with one parent stating that swimming is already a stressful when a child is first exposed to it, and broken glass adds another level of fear and trauma around the swimming experience.
The report further explains that while broken glass presented a problem, the issue was compounded by the absence of a vacuum in an operable condition to help clear the mess on site. The facility’s vacuum was not working and because of this, once again, it had to be closed for manual cleaning.
A parent interviewed in the report expressed concern saying she felt more needs to be done to increase safety and curb trespassing at city facilities.
