Social media was abuzz with the headline “AQUARIUM EXPLODES”. On Friday, the enormous aquarium at Radisson Blu Hotel burst, releasing thousands of gallons water, tropical fish and other debris into Berlin’s cold streets.
Many media outlets, including The New York Times reported that the AquaDom aquarium was 50 feet tall and 38 feet wide. It was later evacuated by emergency crews.
Over 100 emergency responders arrived on the scene, located near Alexanderplatz. The outlet reported that at least two individuals were transported to the hospital with injuries related to glass.
According to the Associated Press 300 people were evacuated by the hotel.
The hotel’s circular aquarium was surrounded by a glass elevator that provided an inside view of the marine life. It contained approximately 1,500 tropical fish, representing 100 species.
Sandra Weeser, a member of the federal parliament, said that the hotel was a “picture of devastation” with many dead fish and broken pieces. The ones that could have been saved were frozen to their deaths.

Markus Kamrad, an official representative from the Berlin Senate, stated that fish who have survived are being moved as safely and securely as possible. Our Plan A is to activate the electricity. Plan B would be for them to be taken to safety. We have offers from some places that they might be willing to accept them.
Authorities are still investigating the possible structural damage that the explosion could have done to the hotel, although the cause is not known.
According to the BBC, police do not believe that it was a targeted attack. Local media suggest that there may have been a technical problem.
