A $2 million anonymous donation will add two additional lanes of swimming to the 25-m-long (82-ft-long) pool originally planned in Riverview, New Brunswick.
According to CBC News, the town councillors unanimously voted for accepting the generous gift during a meeting held in early July. The town is also looking into adding an outdoor skating park to the recreation centre.
The report states that the comprehensive plans for the recreation center include a separate swimming pool, a walking path, a fieldhouse with removable artificial turf and a meeting space.
Construction of the recreation center is expected to begin in 2024, pending final approval from the town council. The cost of construction is estimated to be between $39.1 and $45.9 millions, with the town providing approximately $14 million and the federal government and provincial governments contributing around $20 and $6 million respectively.
The report also states that the plan includes decommissioning of the Pat Crossman Memorial Swimming Pool, which is a six-lane swimming pool, when the new recreation center becomes operational. The revised plans will include additional swimming lanes as well as a potential outdoor skatepark. They are scheduled to be presented to town council in September.
