Recently, the Town of Ajax was honoured during the Durham Greener Buildings Program launch for its sustainability efforts with the installation of a motorized pool cover at the Ajax Community Centre, reflecting the town’s dedication to environmental leadership and innovation.
The new pool cover, added in January 2023, serves multiple purposes:
- Preventing water evaporation and reducing heat loss
- Enhancing air quality in and around the pool area
- Extending the lifespan of dehumidification equipment
- Lowering carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and heating expenses during pool closure, resulting in annual savings of about $20,000
- Since installation, the project has led to an annual reduction of approximately 45 tonnes (50 tons) of CO2 equivalent, which amounts to the power needed to run 30 homes for a year.
Mayor Shaun Collier expressed gratitude to the staff for their ongoing efforts.
In February 2022, the town partnered with Elexicon Group Inc. (EGI) to address carbon emissions and heating expenses related to indoor swimming pools.
EGI, a non-regulated energy and utility services company, installed a motorized pool cover, preventing 95 per cent of surface evaporation during closure. This initiative aligns with the Durham Greener Buildings Program, launched to promote sustainability and climate action in the building industry.
The program is part of the Region’s Community Energy Plan, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in response to Durham Regional Council’s climate emergency declaration.
