A Welland-based contractor was awarded $88,800 to install the Maple Park Pool ramp. This project was proposed by the city’s community services director to improve accessibility and provide more users with access.
Serianni Construction Ltd. was selected from two other bidders who had submitted more expensive proposals for the job. Aqua Plans Aquatic Consultants Inc. assisted the city staff in designing and preparing this tender. It is expected that the work will be completed before next year’s swimming season.
According to The Standard Rob Axiak, the city’s director of community services said that the matter was brought up at a city council meeting. The city has now applied for a federal grant to cover the cost of the enhancement.
“We are interested in applying for the maximum amount of funds, $100,000, to cover this project. Axiak stated that if we fail to succeed, funds were budgeted to allow us continue with this critical project to enhance the facility.
He said that even though there are many options for meeting AODA (Accessibility of Ontarians With Disabilities Act), standards for pools, such the use chairlifts for people with disabilities, all new pools must have ramps. They allow a wider audience to use the pool than a chairlift.
Axiak told council members at the meeting that plans for the new Memorial Park Pool in the east end of the city had a similar ramp. Axiak also answered a question from a councilor about whether contractors would have to dig out a site for the ramp. He said that the ramp would be built into seven-lane pool. This will make it possible to use seven lanes. One lane will have a ramp partially in it.
