The Finnish word “sauna” refers to a heated room, but this tradition is ancient and universal. For example, Native Americans used sweat lodges; the Russians banyans; and Scots crawled in heated stone huts without windows and tiny doors since the Bronze Age.
In her new book, “SAUNA: the Power of Deep Heat,” freelance journalist Emma O’Kelly will explore the history of saunas and its unique culture, as well as the health benefits of the practice. SAUNA, a Welbeck Balance Hardcover, is scheduled to be released in September 2023 for less than $30.
O’Kelly explains the history of saunas and their worldly traditions in chronological order. She explores sauna as a way of connecting with nature, connecting with one’s local community, or retreating from the hectic world. She discusses the benefits of combining saunas with cold rinses. She writes about sauna culture, etiquette and rituals such as salt scrubs and honey wraps.
Numerous scientific studies show that saunas can lower blood pressure, reduce dementia and cardiovascular disease risk, boost immunity, and combat chronic fatigue. O’Kelly writes there’s a good reason why nations that love saunas, like Finland, Sweden, and Norway, vie for the top spot in the United Nations World Happiness Report each year. The book “SAUNA”, by O’Kelly, is a great introduction to the benefits of regular sauna usage on health and happiness.
